Wilderness permits are required year-round for any overnight stay in the Yosemite Wilderness. Permits are not required for day hikes (except if hiking to Half Dome). Wilderness permits are only issued to a limited number of people for each trailhead in order to provide outstanding opportunities for solitude, as required by the Wilderness Act. Learn more about obtaining a wilderness permit.
Most of Yosemite is covered in snow during winter. Before planning a wilderness trip during this time, please ensure you're prepared for winter conditions.
Operating Hours & Seasons
8 am to 5 pm daily. The Tuolumne Meadows Wilderness Center is closed seasonally from approximately October 15 to late May, depending on conditions. This wilderness center is not open when Tioga Road is closed. During this time, self-registration wilderness permits are available from outside the nearest permit station to each trailhead.
