Trees and Seeds

Dusty blue berries give contrasting color to the bright green needles of the Eastern Red Cedar.
Dwarf Sumac

The first winged or dwarf sumac and wild black cherry seeds may have been dropped here by birds, which ate the berries and deposited the seeds. Do you hear or see any birds in the area looking for berries? Take a close look at the black cherry tree. Those parallel rows of holes were drilled by the yellow-bellied sapsucker, a type of woodpecker, as it looked for bugs to eat. Downy and hairy woodpeckers also like this area. Look for black and white birds with red patches on the backs of their heads.
