Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits

In the 18th Century, Spanish military pay chests, important documents, and valuables consigned for shipment back to Spain were kept secured in this room. Notaries, administrative officials appointed by the king, accounted for all monies and goods going to or from the New World. Take a good look at the back wall. A Royal Spanish coat of arms is still visible on the back of this room.

During the 19th Century, the U.S. Army use this room as a supply room. The solid slab of granite in the doorway was placed there in the 1840s at the request of the Quartermaster to serve as a counter so that soldiers could not enter the room beyond that point.
