Quick Facts

Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits

The Tidal Basin is an engineered waterway that helps regulate the Potomac River and refreshes the Washington Channel. When the tide flows, the gate under this bridge opens to allow water to flow into the Tidal Basin. Then at low tide, the opposing Outlet Bridge's gate opens, allowing the water to flow out through the Washington Channel.
