Information
Using island and California native plants in your garden helps to preserve the Mediterranean-type ecosystem, home to remarkable and globally significant levels of plant diversity.
This type of ecosystem, with their characteristic and unique climatic regimes of mild wet winters and warm and dry summers, is found in only five places: 1) California and northern Baja California; 2) the basin of the Mediterranean Sea; 3) southwestern Australia; 4) the western cape of South Africa and 5) the central coast of Chile.
Although these regions cover only slightly more than 2% of the world's land areas, combined they have approximately 20% of all of the plant species in the world.
Moreover, these Mediterranean-climate regions also are recognized internationally as some of the most imperiled ecosystems in the world.
Channel Islands National Park preserves some of the finest remnants of this coastal Mediterranean-type ecosystem in America.
