Fort Smith had two separate officers' quarters buildings. The south officers' quarters was completed in 1852. The building had four apartments, each apartment having four 19 ft x 16 ft rooms. The building at this site was built by a contractor and was considered of poor quality and in constant need of repairs. It was destroyed by a fire in 1867.
