The north end officer's quarters was completed in 1852. The building had four apartments with each apartment having four 19 ft x 16 ft rooms. Construction of this officer's quarters building was supervised by the Quartermaster Department and was considered of better quality than the Southern quarters. It was destroyed by a fire in 1870. Lack of housing for officers was one of the reasons for the military closing Fort Smith in 1871.
