Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits

Many scientists believe that winter is the major factor influencing elk populations. Mild winters allow many more elk to survive until spring, but severe winters result in significant levels of winter-kill for many animals, not just elk. In severe winters (as in 1988–89 or 1996–97), up to 25% of the herd can die.
