Listen carefully for the rustle of leaf litter on the forest floor or at night, for a chorus of barking tree frogs. You may hear skinks and salamanders foraging for insects in the leaves beneath saw palmettos, sweet bay, and other plants. Early in the day or after a rain, listen for box turtles plodding along looking for earthworms, berries, and mushrooms. Barely audible as they slither their way through the underbrush, snakes hunt for frogs, lizards, and mice.
