Pershing Square is the heart of the Presidio's main post. The square marks the former site of the Officers' Quarters where General John J. Pershing's family was living when a fire consumed the house, killing Frances Pershing, the commander's wife and suffragette, and three of their four children. Commander Pershing was in Mexico at the time, pursuing Mexican revolutionary, Pancho Villa.
Pershing commanded the 8th infantry, and before then, led the famed Buffalo Soldiers. He commanded the American Expeditionary Force in WWI, leading to him becoming the only 6-star general other than George Washington.
