Founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1743 to "promote useful knowledge," the American Philosophical Society's members included notable founders of the republic - Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Hamilton and Madison - as well as doctors, artisans and tradesmen. Philosophical Hall, completed in 1789 as home to this learned society, sat adjacent to the seat of government in the 1790s.
