Quick Facts

Wheelchair Accessible

Mudflats picnic area only has one table, but the view of the Teton Range is spectacular. The name arises from the mud flats that become exposed when water releases from Jackson Lake dam lower the lake level toward the natural pool level. At that point the Snake River carves through the exposed muddy lake-bottom sediments.

Name Origin

The water in the northern end of Jackson Lake is a reservoir. When water is released from the dam, the water recedes south toward the natural lake leaving behind lake bottom mud cut by the Snake River.
