Quick Facts

Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits

This spot is believed to be the final resting place of Reverend Alexander H. Morrell, who came from Maine to strengthen the Baptist faith in the area during the mid-1800s.Brackett was commissioned by the American Missionary Association in 1866 to serve as Superintendent of Free Schools in the lower Shenandoah Valley. When Storer College came into existence in 1867, Morrell answered the call from the Home Mission Board to return to Harpers Ferry as the spiritual leader of the college. In 1870, he and his family settled into what would become known as the Morrell House. He remained at Storer College until 1881, preaching and counseling students.

This monument in memory of Morrell (and presumed final resting place) now stands on the grounds of the Curtis Freewill Baptist Church on the former campus of Storer College.
