The piece of land at the mouth of Piscataway Creek has been occupied for thousands of years; colonial records indicate that the Susquehannock tribe constructed a fort on the small area of land in 1673, and excavations at the Accokeek Creek Site conducted by Alice Ferguson in 1935 indicate that people were using the area by at least 1300 BCE. Today, the area remains central to traditional practices for members of the Piscataway Indian Nation and Piscataway Conoy Tribe.

Mockley Point was the site of an important fishery from the late 18th through early 20th centuries, and in 1846 became an official port and major inspection point for lumber exports. Today visitors can fish, and explore along the Mockley Point Trail and Accokeek Creek Boardwalk.
