Know Before You Go

The seashore is an enjoyable place for swimming, but rough surf and rip currents can turn a fun visit into a frightening one. Tides, waves, and winds constantly barrage these barrier islands. Even at the shore's edge, crashing waves can pick you up and throw you to the sandy bottom causing injuries.

Beach Safety Tips:

- Do not swim alone, at night, or near fishing piers.
- Children should swim only with adult supervision.
- Lifeguarded beaches are staffed during summer months.
- Do not swim near surfers. The surfboard can hit or cut you.
- Never swim in or around inlets.
- Do not swim during thunderstorms. Lightning does strike the beach.
