Little Falls Branch drains from Maryland and Washington DC and flows under C&O Canal into the Potomac River at Little Falls rapids. The rapids mark the upstream end of the tidal Potomac. In the 1800's, a dam diverted water from the stream into the reservoirs that supplied the District Of Columbia with water. When the Washington Aqueduct was built, the dams were removed. Streams like the Little Falls Branch, flow under the canal through culverts. There are approximately 180 culverts along the 184.5 miles of canal.
