Winfield Scott (1786-1866) was a decorated and highly respected US Army general who rose to prominence in the War of 1812 and captured Mexico City during the Mexican American War in 1841. The ranking army officer at the outbreak of the American Civil War, Scott developed the Anaconda Plan to cut off the Confederacy from resources. Scott recommended Robert E. Lee take command of the US Army, though Lee chose to serve the Confederacy. Scott resigned in October 1861. Please note that this memorial is difficult to access; there are no crosswalks to help you approach the statue and this is a busy roadway.
