Ladybug Trailhead
Animal-Safe Food Storage, Audio Description, Trailhead, Trash/Litter Receptacles
The trailhead for this trail is currently inaccessible by vehicle (see Road Conditions below). The trailhead sign was damaged during heavy winter storms of 2022-2023. Anyone wishing to travel the trail should be self-reliant and expect significant flood and landslide damage, including sections of trail that are completely gone near all drainages.
This 4.2 mile (6.8 km) one-way trail, or 8.4 mile (13.5 km) out and back, is a moderate climb. After traveling through forests and passing over creeks, the path reaches Ladybug Camp, where ladybugs can be found during cooler months. The route then narrows and heads uphill to giant sequoias and Whiskey Log Camp.
This area is known for excellent fishing, secluded camping, and lower elevations where snow melts earlier in spring than in other areas of the park. Beware of the rough road that leads here from Three Rivers. If you encounter ladybugs, please take care to not hurt them as you explore.
Road Conditions
The South Fork Road is currently impassable within the national park due to extensive, heavy damage from flooding and landslides during winter storms in 2022-2023. No trailhead parking is available. When the road was open, it was a very rugged, backcountry road. Many sections of the road are one-lane with limited visibility. There are also stretches with steep drop-offs and no shoulder. High clearance vehicles are recommended.
