Named after General Dan Christie Kingman, former Chief of Engineers of the US Army Corps of Engineers, Kingman Island was designed as part of a series of scenic improvements to Anacostia park in the early 20th Century. Made up of dredged river silt from the Anacostia, the island supports a variety of wildlife. Currently, the natural areas of this park are managed by the National Park Service. DC government manages other facilities and activities at this location.
