How Did People Get to the Lighthouse Before the Bridge?

Walkway with a handrail leading to a lighthouse atop a cliff.
Before the bridge, there was a paved walkway to the lighthouse.

Stop here at the foot of the suspension bridge.

You are now at the new footbridge completed in the spring of 2012. The former suspension bridge was closed on January 6, 2010. This bridge is a replica of the previous 156 foot suspension bridge. A comparison of the photograph, taken in the mid 1800s, to the present lighthouse shows that it was originally possible to walk to the lighthouse along a path, but in 1940 erosion caused the trail to crumble and fall into the sea. A temporary causeway was used until a suspension bridge was built in 1954 to span the chasm.

Please cross the suspension bridge and stop at the next sign.
