Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987 Hermits Rest was built by Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter to serve as a waypoint, rest area, and gift shop for tourist at the end of their tour. Named for its 'remote' nature away from the then developed Village area the building displays many of Colter's trademark techniques and styles.

Grand Canyon now houses the single largest collection of Mary Colter buildings still left standing, be sure to check them out!
