Officer's Quarters

You are inside an officers’ living quarters. An officer used a room like this for sleeping, an office, and sometimes as headquarters. Fort Pickens once had six officers’ quarters in the north wall and seven in the south wall. Most officers’ quarters no longer exist. In 1861, the first year of the Civil War, some of these rooms served as a hospital for Union troops.

At this hospital surgeons and their assistants cared for the sick, wounded, and dying. Those who died in defense of the United States were laid to rest in a temporary cemetery outside the fort.

Later, around 1888, soldiers used rooms like these to house Chiricahua Apache prisoners of war, including Geronimo and his family.
