Counterscarp Gallery

A tunnel under the dry ditch leads to this casemated, or enclosed, gallery. Like the scarp gallery, the counterscarp gallery has loopholes for muskets and ventilators for air circulation and powder magazines for storing gun powder.

Unlike the scarp gallery, this gallery also has embrasures for cannon. At each embrasure, look down at the floor and you will find granite blocks, or traverse stones. With iron rails bolted on top, traverse stones made rolling cannon from side to side easier.

Today you can still see the remains of traverse stones around the fort.
