The KNP Complex Fire: How it Started

On September 9, 2021, lightning started three fires in Sequoia National Park. Two of the fires burning in remote, rugged terrain and heavy fuels, presented challenges to firefighting and spread rapidly. By mid-September, they joined to form a single fire called the KNP Complex. From here you can see a steep, burned slope behind the Foothills administrative buildings where the fire burned in mixed hardwood and shrub vegetation.  You’ll notice a range of conditions, from blackened, standing-dead trees or bare ground, to areas sprouting grasses or containing live green trees.  At other locations in the app, learn more about how fire history, terrain, vegetation, and weather affect how a fire burns.
