This trailhead orientation panel shows a map and images of the area around Farewell Gap Trail and Franklin Lakes Trail.

Farewell Gap Trail and Franklin Lakes Trail share the same route for the first 2.8 miles. From there, Farewell Gap Trail travels to the right for 2.7 miles one-way. To the left, Franklin Lakes Trail travels 2.6 miles one-way to a pair of lakes. Explore the rainbow-colored rocks that attracted miners to this area in the 1870s along Franklin Lakes Trail or see evidence of these miners as you view mineshafts (from a safe distance) along Farewell Gap Trail.

The first campsite along the trail is 4 miles from the trailhead at the junction between Franklin Lakes and Farewell Gap Trails. Although each of these hikes can be done as a day trip, many backpackers make Franklin Lakes their first stop on their way over Franklin Pass to Rattlesnake Canyon, the Kern Canyon and Mt. Whitney.
