Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits, Parking - Auto, Scenic View/Photo Spot, Trash/Litter Receptacles
Located along the Generals Highway between Hospital Rock and the Giant Forest Museum, Eleven Range Overlook features an outdoor exhibit and a spectacular vista overlooking the Kaweah Canyon toward the San Joaquin Valley. Visibility from this point changes remarkably depending on season, temperature, and the presence of smoke from nearby fires. At times, air pollution from far away can obscure distant views of mountain peaks and the valley.
The KNP Complex Fire: High-Severity Fire In A Mixed-Conifer/Black Oak Forest
Across the KNP Fire Complex area, there is a mosaic, or patchwork, of fire severity and effects. Just up the road from here, you can see where fire killed numerous incense-cedar, ponderosa pine, and black oaks on both sides of the road. In the Marble Fork of the Kaweah River drainage that this slope rises above, fire severity was high in many areas due to high forest density; accumulated logs, sticks, and debris on the forest floor; many drought-killed trees; and steep terrain. How does the fire severity here compare to the severity in areas with a history of prescribed fire, such as the Giant Forest?
