Fort Smith was only fired upon once between 1817 and 1871. On July 31, 1864, cannon fire came from across the Poteau River. What was thought to be an attack on the fort turned out to be a diversion while anotherĀ attack was occurring in another part of the town. The Confederates attempted to capture the city of Fort Smith but failed. Fort Smith remained under Union control for the rest of the Civil War.
