This urn was carved from a piece of a memorial honoring the victims of the USS Maine explosion in Havana Harbor. The original memorial was destroyed in a hurricane. The refashioned urn was given to President Calvin Coolidge when he visited Cuba in 1928. The urn depicts two figures representing the United States and Cuba joining hands over a depiction of the USS Maine sinking. The memorial also shows two crests for the US and Cuba, and the oak and laurel leaves from the Cuban crest.

This urn was sculpted from a fragment of the marble column from the Monument to the Victims of the "Maine" erected in the city of Havana. The column was toppled by the October 20, 1926 hurricane.
