Quick Facts

Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits, Pets Allowed, Scenic View/Photo Spot, Trailhead, Wheelchair Accessible

This short, easy walk offers stunning views of Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, and Sentinel Rock as well as a vibrant example of the rich biodiversity in Yosemite's meadows. From Yosemite Village, walk west along the bicycle path toward Lower Yosemite Fall or take the Valleywide Shuttle to the Yosemite Falls shuttle stop. From the Yosemite Falls shuttle stop, cross the street and follow the bike path, bearing left when the path forks. Continue keeping left and travel across the boardwalk to complete the loop. The loop can be done in either direction.

In spring, notice how the meadow floods from snowmelt and flushes with the bright green of new plant growth as Yosemite Falls thunders nearby. In early summer, listen for the distinct call of red-winged blackbirds and look for western azaleas, showy milkweed, cow parsnip, and many more species in bloom. In late summer and into fall, blooming goldenrod and spent vegetation gradually turns the meadow golden. In winter, admire the frost decorating the plants, the snow topping Half Dome and surrounding cliffs, and the ice cone that collects at the base of Upper Yosemite Fall.

Distance: 1 mile (1.6 km) loop

Tips & Seasonal Information

Cook's Meadow is an excellent walk year-round with something unique to offer in all seasons. Boardwalks are slippery when wet and even more so when covered in snow or frost.

Share the trail! Leashed pets, bicycles, and strollers are allowed. Stay on boardwalks and paved paths only. Do not enter the meadow! Off-trail travel compacts meadow soil and crushes plants, damaging the ecosystem that is important to the many plants and animals that thrive in this fragile environment.

Visit in early morning or at dusk for the best chance of seeing birds and other wildlife.

Accessibility

This trail is wheelchair accessible except when covered in snow. There is no seating available along this path. Limited designated accessible parking spaces are available in a small parking lot next to Sentinel Bridge, located at the southeast corner of this loop walk.
