This reconstructed chicken coop provides a safe place for poultry to sleep at night and to lay their eggs. Raising poultry was an important part of any farm. The guineas, chickens, and turkeys provided a reliable source of food.

Poultry was most useful for the eggs—not only for the farmers to eat but also to take to town and sell. Different breeds of poultry served different purposes. Some chickens are better to eat, others do better at laying eggs, and other breeds are better at "brooding" or incubating eggs so they hatch.
