Chapel Origins
During the Civil War most army officers favored the Episcopalian faith, so it was no surprise when a new chaplain arrived at the Presidio in 1863, he was Episcopalian. It's likely that he raised private funds to construct the chapel through the support of the Presidio officers and the Episcopal Diocese.
The chapel was open by the time the Confederacy surrendered on April 9, 1865. The death toll of the war was at least 558,000 lives. Five days later President Lincoln was assassinated. News of both these events reached the Presidio on Easter weekend, overwhelming the new chapel.
