Artillery was vital to the defense of a fort during the Civil War. Forces at Fort Smith used a variety of cannons, including the 12-pound Napoleon, which could fire a 12-pound ball nearly a mile.

The cannon that can be viewed on the parade ground is a replica of one of the cannons left by the military when they abandoned Fort Smith in 1871.
