Here, Cesar Chavez was laid to rest in 1993. Upon her passing in 2016, Cesar's wife Helen was interred by his side. Cesar wished to be buried on the grounds where he pursued his labors as an activist during his last quarter century. After his passing, Helen Chavez made it clear she did not want him to ever be left alone. When U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar approached the Chavez family about creating a national monument at this location, the Chavez family agreed, knowing Cesar's resting place would never be abandoned.
