Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits

A bastion is a gun emplacement for defending the fort. Fort Smith had five bastions. Bastion 1 was converted to the Commissary, Bastion 2 was converted to the Quartermaster's office, and Bastion 3 was converted to the powder magazine. Bastions 4 and 5 were left unfinished as part of the fort wall. Today, there is a low stone wall outlining the locations of Bastions 3, 4, and 5.
