While fire is key to the health of this forest, it presents challenges. Fires that are too big and hot may kill some sequoias, even the occasional monarch. Fires that are too small don't clear the ground sufficiently or open the forest to more sunlight. Fire puts smoke into the air, and leaves blackened terrain that some find unattractive. You can learn more by visiting a burned area a year or two after a fire, and see what kind of changes have taken place.
This exhibit, titled "A Natural Process," shows how fire plays a part of sequoia growth.
