James Warren Woodward was born on March 5, 1916 in Manhattan, Montana. He worked at a pencil factory for a time in Shelbyville, Tennessee before moving to Greenbelt, Maryland where he lived with his wife, Margaret, and their three kids, David, Jimmie, and Judy. He served in World War II, where he was mustered in in July 1944 and sent overseas in January1945. He was a Private First Class in Company C, 179th Regimental Combat. Woodward was killed in action in Germany on March 19, 1945.

He is buried at Stones River National Cemetery in plot P-6301.
