| Rufus Manifee Wood was born in 1827 in Powell, Knox County, Tennessee to parents Clement Wood and Hanna Alldridge Wood. Rufus Wood was one of six children, of which he was the youngest boy and the second youngest child. He went on to marry Martha Mallissa Conner Wood. They had 7 children from the 1851 to 1861, the last being just before his enlistment. Four of their children passed away before the age of 10. After his last child was born, he enlisted as a private at the age of 36 on April 18th, 1862. He was mustered into Company G of the 6th Tennessee Infantry on April 23, 1862. He is incorrectly listed under the name "Rufus W Wood," but National Cemetery Internment Records, Birth Records, and Marriage Records confirm his middle name being Manifee. Wood campaigned with the 6th Tennessee and fought at the Battle of Stones River in December of 1862-January of 1863. Private Wood died on January 19, 1863 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee due to disease. The disease is unspecified. Rufus M Wood is laid to rest in the Stones River National Cemetery in plot F-2243. |
