Born in Pennsylvania in 1828 William lived with his family and worked as a Paper Stainer in Philadelphia before joining up in June 1861. Records indicate that he deserted and then returned in April 1862.
At the beginning of 1863 William was promoted to corporal. During the battle of Gettysburg corporal Strong was killed in action July 2, 1863. He was survived by his wife Anna (married 1848), his son Harry 13 and Clara 11.
