| Percy Elmo Underhill was born to Edward and Lois Underhill on February 22, 1909, in Davidson, Tennessee. He was the eldest of 9 children. During his adulthood, Percy moved to Murfreesboro, Tennessee where he worked at the U.S. Veteran’s Hospital in town, contributing to the care of those who had served their country. In 1940, at the age of 31, he registered for military service. His draft card described him as standing at 5’ 8” and weighing 145 pounds with a light complexion, brown eyes, and brown hair. Around this time, he married Edith Underhill and had a son named James. On December 1, 1943, at the age of 34, Percy was called to service to support war efforts during World War II. He was stationed as a Pharmacists Mate 3rd Class (PHM3) with the United States Naval Reserve (USNR). While specific details of his assignments remain unknown, the role of a pharmacist’s mate was vital: these medical specialists worked under the supervision of medical officers, providing treatment and care to sailors, marines, and other personnel. Their duties ranged from tending to the sick and wounded in shipboard sick bays and naval hospitals to administering aid under fire with Marine landing parties. Though the particulars of Percy’s service are unclear, it is clear he played a crucial part in supporting the war effort and caring for those in need. After nearly two years of service, Percy was honorably discharged on August 1, 1945. He returned to his family in Tennessee, resuming civilian life. Percy lived to the age of 64, passing away on May 21, 1973. He was laid to rest at Stones River National Cemetery, his legacy honored in plot T-7085. |
