Thomas Gore was an assistant during the building of the Allegheny Portage Railroad, and he worked as a fireman. He was also a boat captain on the Main Line Canal. His section boat he built was named "General Scott" and it traveled back and forth between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh on the canal.

Thomas was considered to be one of Johnstown's "most esteemed citizens." He was married to Amanda Jane Mitchell in 1848.
