Theodore Stewart was born in Tyler County in what is now West Virginia. Theodore worked as a farmer until his enlistment in Sistersville, VA, August of 1861. Within three to four months he was promoted to corporal.

While stationed in Fredericksburg, VA in December 1862, Theodore was shot in his right thigh, but it was merely a flesh wound. He convalesced in hospital in Washington D.C. March of 1863 found Theodore in Grafton, VA (now VW) with an unspecified sickness. On July 3, 1863 Theodore was killed in action during the Battle of Gettysburg.
