In 1841 Thomas Paynter Carey was born in Sussex County, Delaware. Thomas worked as a farmer in Sussex County until enlisting in September 1861 in Georgetown, Delaware.
December 13, 1862 Thomas is wounded at Fredericksburg, but returns to his regiment at the beginning of 1863. Serving with his regiment during the Battle of Gettysburg, Thomas in shot in the head and killed on July 3, 1863.
