| Oscar D Steel was born in 1841 in Tennessee. At the age of 212, he enlisted in the Union army on March 1st, 1862. He was a Sergeant in Company F of the 1st TN Cavalry. The 1st Tennessee Cavalry were involved in many major battles after their creation in 1862. They fought at the battle of Stones River and the Tullahoma Campaigns, Chickamauga and Chattanooga, and more. In November of 1862, they moved to Alexandria and eventually to Sparta, TN. There were actions in Sparta throughout the end of November and into early December. During these skirmishes is when Sergeant Steel lost his life. He died on December 1st, 1863 after reportedly being killed in Sparta, TN. Oscar D Steel is laid to rest in plot J-3926 in the Stones River National Cemetery. |
