Shearer, Jonathan E

Jonathan E. Shearer was born in October 1841. He was recruited in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania and was mustered on October 26, 1861. Shearer served as a Private in Company I of the 9th Pennsylvania Regiment.
The 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry first left for Kentucky in November 1861, then served in Indiana until mid-January 1862. They then went back to Kentucky, where the three battalions split to different cities. They remaind split as they moved through Tennessee, but came back together in Kentucky later on. They participated in a few raids and fights in Kentucky and the mountains in eastern Tennessee, splitting their time between the two states. Shearer died on at the age of 21 on April 13, 1863 in Franklin, Tennessee, originally buried at Franklin.
Jonathan Shearer is now laid to rest in the Stones River National Cemetery, in plot H-3159.
