Samuel Dillon worked on the Allegheny Portage Railroad as an engineer and fireman.

In 1828, Samuel moved to Cambria County. He joined his father as a farmer for a few years before buying land at what would become known as Cresson Springs where he made some improvements. He moved to Altoona after he sold his property in 1854. Samuel then moved to Carrolltown and was involved in the hotel business before getting back into farming in Susquehanna Township.

He married a woman named Susan and had fifteen children.
