John P. V. Renbottom worked as a blacksmith in Hutsonville, Crawford County, Illinois. In some records he appears as John P. V. Rubottom. John worked as blacksmith int Hutsonville, Crawford County, Illinois. In March 1864, he married Elizabeth Ayers. One year later, at age 22, John enlisted as a private in Company C of the 155th Illinois Infantry. The muster rolls describe him as being 5’6”, with light hair, gray eyes, and a light complexion.
The 155th Illinois Infantry organized at Camp Butler and began their service on February 28, 1865. Renbottom and his comrades travelled to Kentucky then moved to Nashville, Tennessee. They were tasked with defending the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad. Renbottom’s unit was stationed in the block houses protecting key railroad bridges near Tullahoma, Tennessee.
Within a month of reaching Tullahoma, John contracted measles. He died at the regimental hospital in Tullahoma on March 28, 1865. He rests in Stones River National Cemetery in Plot J-3928.
