Samuel Pugh served with the 1st Tennessee Infantry in Company B as a Private. The regiment was organized at Camp Dick Robinson, Kentucky in August and September of 1861. They had duty in Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia.

In February of 1863, they were doing reconnaissance in Franklin and Brentwood, Tennessee. Private Pugh died on February 28, 1863. His cause of death is unknown.

Samuel Pugh is laid to rest in the Stones River National Cemetery in plot O-6116.
