Description:

Philip W. Carper was born on November 4, 1840. He was 22 years old when he enlisted in the 35th Battalion Virginia Calvary on December 17, 1862. He took part of numerous engagements.

He was present at the Battle of Brandy Station in June 1863. According to the official Medical and Surgical History of the War of Rebellion, during the action he suffered a, “sabre cut of the left partial region, also a wound of the right arm and left hand at Brandy Station June 9th 1863. Admitted to the 2nd Division Hospital, Alexandria Virginia, June 10th. Transferred to Old Capital Prison June for exchange.”

Philip was exchanged and was active during the 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign. His unit was attached to General Thomas Rosser’s Laurel Brigade. Surviving the campaign, Philip would surrender with the rest of his forces in the spring of 1865. He passed away on September 21, 1918 and is buried in the Chesnut Grove Cemetery in Herndon, Virginia.
