In September and October 1918, the United States was engaged in the bloodiest battle in American history. While Antietam, Gettysburg, and D-Day loom large in American popular memory of great and terrible battles, none eclipsed the total carnage and loss of the Meuse-Argonne, which saw over 120,000 American casualties, over 26,000 of whom were killed in action. Mess Sgt. Paul Hill was one of them.

Little is known about Hill and his life prior to joining the United States Army. We do know he was a Pennsylvania native who served in Company B of the 361st Regiment, 91st Infantry Division. The 91st was one of many American divisions engaged at the Meuse-Argonne. Hill was killed in action during this battle on October 2, 1918.

Originally buried in France, Hill's remains were brought home and eventually buried in Gettysburg after the war.
