After emigrating from Ireland, Patrick made Providence, Rhode Island his residence until enlisting June 1861. While serving with the Rhode Island 1st Light Artillery, at the Battle of Gettysburg, John is mortally wounded in the groin while holding his battery's horses, July 2, 1863.
